ACCI Delegation Meets with IRU and Afghan Embassy in Geneva

The ACCI delegation, Mr. Khan Jan Alokozay, Senior Vice-Chairman and Abdul Qadir Bahman, Deputy CEO met with Mr. Marek Retelski, Deputy Secretary General of IRU (International Road transport Union) and with Mr. Aziz Omar, Afghan Acting-Ambassador in Geneva, Switzerland on 27 July 2015.

Both side highlighted the challenges and opportunities in transport and transit sector in Afghanistan and focused on the role TIR convention for Afghanistan to become as the transit hub in the region. The IRU leadership informed ACCI about the upcoming TIR audit, roundtable and workshops which will be done on 22 – 25 August 2015 in Kabul.

ACCI delegation offered its commitment, support and cooperation for this upcoming programs and for the future TIR related works. Both parties also discussed on Pakistan application to join TIR convention which approved by the UN and it will be into force on 16 Jan 2016. Using TIR system will allow Pakistan to connect with Central Asian Countries through Afghanistan and will let Afghanistan to facilitate its transit to other countries through Pakistan. It was mentioned that, China will also join the convention in the coming months and India is interested join the convention too. The connectivity is very important and it will bring peace, prosperity and economic development in the region.

The IRU leadership offered their fully support to Afghanistan and requested ACCI to hardly work for the successful implementation of TIR system in Afghanistan.
